The complete guide to tablecloth sizing for weddings and events. Sizing charts, drop-length explanations, and a free calculator.
Tablecloth size = Table size + (2 × Drop length)
The “drop” is how far the tablecloth hangs from the edge of the table. For weddings, a full drop to the floor is the most popular choice.

Common round table sizes:
Use this chart to quickly find the right round tablecloth. Standard banquet table height is approximately 76cm (30″).
| Table Size | Full Drop | ¾ Drop | Half Drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3ft (90cm) | 90" (228cm) | 70" (178cm) | 70" (178cm) |
| 4ft (120cm) | 108" (274cm) | 90" (228cm) | 70" (178cm) |
| 5ft (150cm) | 120" (305cm) | 108" (274cm) | 90" (228cm) |
| 5.5ft (168cm) | 130" (330cm) | 120" (305cm) | 90" (228cm) |
| 6ft (180cm) | 132" (335cm) | 120" (305cm) | 108" (274cm) |
Sizes rounded to nearest standard commercial tablecloth size. Standard table height: 76cm.
Common UK trestle tables are 2.5ft (76cm) wide. If your tables differ, use the calculator above for an exact fit.
| Table Size | Full Drop | ¾ Drop | Half Drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4ft × 2.5ft (122 × 76cm) | 70" × 108" | 60" × 90" | 52" × 84" |
| 5ft × 2.5ft (152 × 76cm) | 70" × 120" | 60" × 108" | 52" × 90" |
| 6ft × 2.5ft (183 × 76cm) | 90" × 132" | 70" × 120" | 60" × 108" |
Poseur (cocktail/standing) tables are taller than standard banquet tables at approximately 115cm, so you need a larger cloth for a full floor-length drop.
| Table Diameter | Height | Full Drop | ¾ Drop | Half Drop |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 60cm (standard) | 115cm | 108" (274cm) | 90" (228cm) | 70" (178cm) |
Poseur tables are 115cm tall vs 76cm for standard banquet tables — the full drop is significantly longer. A round 108″ (274cm) cloth gives a floor-length finish.
For round tables, measure the diameter across the widest point. For rectangular tables, measure the width and length. Don't forget to note the table height if it's non-standard (76cm is standard).
Decide how far you want the cloth to hang: full drop (to the floor — most formal and popular for weddings), ¾ drop (elegant, practical), or half drop (casual, table legs visible).
Add twice your chosen drop to each table dimension. For a 150cm round table with a full 76cm drop: 150 + (2 × 76) = 302cm. Round up to the nearest standard size — in this case, a 305cm (120") cloth.

A slightly longer drop always looks more elegant than one that's too short. Extra fabric drapes beautifully.
Full-length drops photograph better than shorter ones, giving tables a clean, uncluttered silhouette.
Add a coloured overlay or runner on top of a white base cloth for an upscale layered look without the cost of full custom linen.
If using table clips to secure the cloth, allow an extra 2–3cm. The calculator already builds in a small tolerance.
Full drops for guest tables but half drops for buffet stations gives a natural hierarchy and makes service easier.
Grand ballrooms suit floor-length white linen; rustic barns work well with half-drop natural tones or hessian runners over white.
For a 5ft (150cm) round table with a full drop to the floor, you need a 120" (305cm) round tablecloth. For a ¾ drop, a 108" (274cm) cloth works perfectly. For a half drop showing the table legs, a 90" (228cm) cloth is ideal.
The drop is the distance the tablecloth hangs down from the edge of the table. A full drop reaches the floor (approximately 76cm for standard-height tables), a ¾ drop hangs about 57cm, and a half drop hangs about 38cm. Full drops create the most formal, elegant look.
For a standard 6ft × 2.5ft (183cm × 76cm) trestle table with a full floor-length drop, you need a 90" × 132" (228cm × 335cm) tablecloth. For a ¾ drop, try 70" × 108" (178cm × 274cm).
Measure your table, then add twice the desired drop length to each dimension. For example, a 150cm round table with a 76cm full drop needs: 150 + (2 × 76) = 302cm, so a 120" (305cm) round cloth. Use our free calculator above for instant results.
For weddings, a full floor-length drop is the most popular choice as it creates an elegant, formal look and hides the table legs completely. It also provides a beautiful backdrop for photographs. For a more casual or garden wedding, a ¾ drop also looks lovely.

For formal weddings and events, yes — a full floor-length drop that just touches or barely brushes the floor is the gold standard. It creates a polished, elegant finish. Make sure the cloth isn't so long that it pools on the floor, which can be a trip hazard.
A tablecloth is the main cover that drapes over the entire table, typically reaching partway to the floor or fully. A table overlay (or topper) is a smaller decorative cloth placed on top of the tablecloth, often at an angle, to add colour or texture.
